Sensōji is an ancient Buddhist temple in Asakusa, Tokyo. Also known as Asakusa Kannon and officially Kinryū-zan Sensō-ji, its temple gate features a large hanging lantern in its center with the word Kaminarimon (“thunder gate”) and is considered to be a symbol of Asakusa ward. According to legend, two fishermen brothers found a statue of the boddhisattva Kannon in the Sumida River, and the chief of their village recognized its sanctity. A temple was built in the area and dedicated to Kannon. In the early Edo period (1603-1867), Tokugawa Ieyasu designated Sensōji as a tutelary temple of the Tokugawa clan. and the area surrounding the temple gradually grew and prospered. Besides the inner sanctum, there are several buildings, historical sites, and sightseeing spots on the temple grounds, including a five-storied pagoda. Every year on New Year’s Day, visitors gather on the temple grounds and often burn incense. Founded in the 600s, Sensōji is the oldest temple in Tokyo and the most popular temple in Japan. Sensōji is famous for its beautiful and spiritual omamori amulets.
